Hello Third Grade Parents!
We will be wrapping up Module 2 in math next week. Students do not have homework next week, due to the short week. We will be reading different versions of Stone Soup this week, and making Stone Soup on Tuesday. Please see the note sent home last week to see what your child signed up for (written in GREEN). We will also be going over nonfiction text features while learning about the pilgrims in our scholastic news. I'm looking forward to seeing and reading all of our Turkey Disguises next week. I've already had so many adorable, creative turkeys turned in! We will eat our Stone Soup, and watch Because of Winn Dixie (a wonderful book that we read at the beginning of the year). Please look for the permission slip in the folder tomorrow for your to watch the movie Tuesday. If you have not returned the green release form, please return the form asap. If you do not plan on signing the sheet please let me know (so I can make plans for your child, or arrange for them not to be in sight during filming my teaching). Heads-up...Tuesday after Thanksgiving will be Early Release. Thank you for all you do, and your wonderful children! I am grateful for this wonderful class! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and feel free to email me with any questions. Sincerely, Mrs. Harris

Hello!
A note about math... We will be writing our Math Homework on our Homework Sheets in our Third Grade Folders. I added some supplemental lessons to our math lessons from additional sources in order to review and teach the concepts further in the time and measurement sections. Depending on how the lesson is going I will assign homework when the concept is fully taught, and students can take it home and independently practice the concept. Please check the Third Grade folder, and ask your child if they have Math Homework that night, and to check their folder (in case they forget). We will not have a Spelling/Reading packet this week or next week. Instead students will be working on the "Book in a Box" project and presentation they will bring on October 30th (*Please DO NOT BRING BEFORE the 30th), and please assist them in not waiting until the last minute to complete the project. Next week we have our Phoenix Zoo Field Trip. I have 2 parents from our class attending, if you are interested in volunteering for the field trip I need to know by Monday mid-day. Our class can have parents from other third grade classes assist us, but I will be letting them know at 11:30 on Monday (in order to solidify the assistance ahead of time). I am looking forward to Parent/Teacher Conferences on the week of the 28th. If you have not signed up, please sign up ASAP (*Also, if you would like a Specials teacher, Resource/Speech/Reading Specialist to attend please note this-we will attempt to have them at the meeting). Please sign up for a conference time ASAP. The link is below: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4da9a728a0f49-fall Last, our Mad Scientist Day will be on October 31st (Early Release). Students and parent helpers may dress up like Crazy Zany Mad-Scientist that day. Students can wear white lab coats (or oversized white dress shirts), and come prepared to have some fun. If you are interested in helping out with this please let me know. It is always a fun day for all of us. Thank you for making this first quarter a wonderful one...looking forward to a fun second quarter! Sincerely, Mrs. Harris Hello Third Grade Parents!

We have had a busy week. We wrapped up our End-of-Module Assessment today. We will be starting our next Module in Eureka this week. We are starting with time intervals tomorrow! We are excited about the possibility of a sunny day tomorrow. We started a craft/observation in Science last week. Due to the current shift in weather we were not able to conduct the experiment (hoping tomorrow will work out-fingers crossed). In reading we are working on responding to text and showing text evidence. This is a critical skill that will be carried through school from here on out. Please glance at weekly homework and check to make sure students are writing in complete sentences when asked questions in regards to text or passages read. Any and all support is greatly appreciated. We are learning map skills in Social Studies. We will be focusing on Longitude and Latitude tomorrow, and mapping locations in Arizona using coordinates. We do not have school on Monday-so we will not have Spelling. I will send home a reading packet tomorrow that will be due next Friday. Math still due the following day. I am returning a number of graded papers tomorrow, so please check your child's Third Grade Folder. We have a ton of birthdays in October! Please let me know if you would like to bring treats, so we can arrange good time to set aside for the kiddos. As a reminder-Birthday invites may only be passed out at school if the entire class is invited. If you would like to contact a parent-you can email me anytime. Last thing, we talked about Junior Heroes today. It is a new program this year at Sandpiper. Students can keep track of acts of kindness and service that they provide to the community, friends/family, or at the school. There is a blue cardstock sheet that explains more that I sent home today. Many of the students have already brainstormed some wonderful ideas to serve around the community. Have a wonderful Friday, and three day weekend. Sincerely, Mrs. Harris Hello Third Grade Parents!
Today was a fun but challenging day. We had a ton of class activities to cover, Spelling Test and Pre-test, Rocket Math Drills and Speed Tests, Library, Math Lesson Reviews, make-up tests for absent classmates and Social Studies map activities. As a whole we had one of those days where every move and action was upsetting every classmate (looks, glances, movements, sounds etc.). We were also very, VERY chatty, and missed numerous instructions because of this and I had to repeat instructions and lessons many times. All of this to say, unfortunately our day came to an end abruptly and we did not get to Fun Friday (a 20-30 min. reward time each Friday that rewards students for doing homework and following STAR expectations during the week). When students have Fun Friday-I typically stuff folders with graded papers and conference quickly with them about the papers that are going home, and some of the work they were graded on. Since we did not have this time-students will bring home graded papers on Monday. Please check folders Monday after school. Homework (the Spelling/Reading packet) was still sent home today. Also, Ms. Griffin (front office) would like the emergency cards returned ASAP (no later than Friday), thank you in advance for your help with that. The emergency cards will also be in the folders on Monday if you did not update them online. Thank you to everyone that responded to my note about the curriculum fee, we appreciate the swift responses. Please let me know via email or returning the paper-with what you intend on doing in regards to the fee, or if you need assistance with it. I'm looking forward to a fresh Monday. The majority of students did well for the substitute, and I said that they would be earning a special treat. We will enjoy some donuts and juice Monday morning prior to our Monday Meeting. We will be reading, The Jelly Donut Promise-and talking about being kind and respectful to each other and our teachers. I am looking forward to our meeting, and getting off to a great start on Monday. Our class won Third Place in the Box Top contest, so PTO gave us popsicles to enjoy. We will hopefully enjoy them next Friday in the garden during Science time. Assignment sheet will be given to students on Monday. We have Spirit Week Next Week in honor of Direct Giving Week: Mon.: Crazy Sock Day Tues.: Crazy Hair Day (no perm. color please) Wed.: Sandpiper shirts or wear blue day (News Channel 10 will be here) Thurs.: Sports Day & Hat Day Fri.: Neon Day & Glow Party 6-8pm Thank you to all of the parents that have already donated to PTO (your child will be entered into the drawing that PTO will hold). Also classes that have 100% participation will get a prize (see the blue direct giving packet sent home last Friday for more details). Have a wonderful weekend. Sincerely, Mrs. Harris Hello Third Grade Parents,
we all made it to September. It has been a wonderful first month getting to know all of your children on a deeper level. They are a wonderful group of kiddos! Real quick recap of where we are at: Math-Continuing with Multiplication and Division strategies (a new one for many of them has been the "tape diagram"). They are working had on practicing and understanding these new concepts. We also started our Math Fluency program, Rocket Math. The students had a great time practicing math facts, and doing the one minute time test. In reading we are talking about Asking and Answering Questions as you read, and text structure-sequencing. We are finding transition words that authors use in order to organize a piece of writing in a logical, sequential order. In writing we continue to work on expanding sentences and paragraph formation, as well as responding to text and questions in complete sentences. In social studies we are learning about geographers and map skills using maps and landmarks in Arizona. Last, in Science we continue to talk about the Sun as a source of energy. I look forward to seeing everyone in the morning, and to having a wonderful week. A few more important things, there are a few people that have still not joined Class Dojo. Please check it out, so we can begin posting student work for you to see. Also, if you have not returned the Class Curriculum Fee, please do so ASAP. Last, homework packets were passed out Friday. The new Assignment Sheet will be handed out in the morning (if you need to see it earlier you can view it on the website). Hello Third Grade Parents!
April was quite a month! The student's worked hard on AZMerit, practiced and performed on Cultural Night, AND blew me away during the American Symbols on Parade performances. We only have a few more weeks of school left! We will have a number of "special days" on the last week of school (so please watch for details regarding those events). We will NOT have homework packets these last couple of weeks. Students should continue to read nightly, and practice multiplication facts. Our field trip to the AZ Science Center is on May 15th-if you would like to attend as a chaperone please let me know ASAP! Thank you for all of your help, and support. It has been an amazing year! |
